Varieties

VARIETIES:

I keep a number of varieties – most important is the NORMAL, as you need strong normals to introduce into many other varieties to keep your stock quality up.
The normals I have are:

Light Greens, Dark Greens, Grey Greens, Sky Blues, Cobalts, Violets and Greys.

I like strong Opalines to give spot and size. Cinnamons for the silky feather texture.

Yellowface blues are one of my favourites.

I also breed Spangles as they seem to be a very virile variety and I like their markings.

Dominant Pieds are so lovely to look at and I’ve recently been concentrating on them again.

I’ve had success with showing the Albinos also but not been able to get the quality of Lutinos they I’d like yet.

My Recessive Pieds (such pretty birds) are coming along well. This is a variety that breed well but are hard to get that good head quality consistently.

I’ll be venturing into the rarer breed – Dark Eyed Clears very shortly. I’ve always liked the look of these birds and would like to see more on the show bench. They have to be shown as AOV Standardised– Any Other Variety Standardised (including Saddleback, Dark eyed Clear, Darkwing, Suffused yellow/white)– but that does not worry me – sometimes you just have to go with your feelings on a variety that you like.  But I would suggest you get a few years experience with normals, opalines, cinnamons or spangles etc., before trying any of the rarer varieties, then go for it.

I have only been able to get this far with my birds by asking questions and seeking advise from other experienced breeders, reading books and looking up information, I can’t stress enough on this as many people drop out of this great hobby with disappointment because they have not had the quick success they want and have not gone to the trouble of finding out what is going wrong and what they can do to make things better. You will find that many, many people are willing to help!  This is why it is really good to join a club near you if you can.
